She's a Power House

by Abby Schiewe |

Nita Marie is a power house- she's a visionary with traction and a designer with tenacity. We were sitting in her car eating take out Chinese food, talking about a project when I noticed how truly down-to-earth she is. Nita believes in purpose and she's one of those people who's dreams aren't dreams- they're goals. For you all to see where Nita Marie came from and where it's going, and to get a feel for the creator behind the creations, I conducted a mini interview... you're welcome.

What is your vision for Nita Marie?

The vision for Nita Marie is to expand into stores as a tailored, affordable brand. Tailored seams, fine lines, and a nice fit.

What led you to start designing?

At TCU I did textile sculptures as a sculpture major. In my exhibitions I was always manipulating a specific medium. I was curious to see how I could use my sculture skills in fashion.

What did you do in Chicago?

I became familiar with the basics- sewing, seam-stressing, fitting. I did a couple of fashion shows there. I did some little things and some big things, I did some crazy things too.

What's the craziest thing you've created?

For the Neoclassical Ballet Company in Dallas, making something to be on stage with those specific materials was a big challenge for me and very out of the box.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Mostly architecture and nature. A lot comes from my art background, looking at paintings and such. I'm very visual- I don't get inspired by music or anything like that.

Are you an animal person?

Yes! My dogs' names are Coco and Chanel. Coco I've had since 2005 but Chanel I found at the school I work at; she was a stray with tons of fleas but she was so cute that we took her in!

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

Somewhere that's warm year-round. My skin loves the sun!

What is the best part of your day to day life?

I work as a school counselor. Making a difference in my kids' lives makes my day. A lot of them don't live in the most ideal circumstances and see me as a mother figure. Its such gratification to see their smiles and to teach them to see beyond their circumstances.

Have you thought about somehow combining your love for kids with fashion?

I have really thought about that! I figure that once I get Nita Marie off the ground I can somehow gradually pull the kids in and make it a big initiative for the community.

What was the happiest moment of your life so far?

Getting accepted into the school of the Art Institute of Chicago. That's where I left my heart.

What did you do when you got accepted?

I was very excited! It took me 8 years to get through school; I ended up working in a hospital and realizing that it wasn't what I wanted to do. In the summer of 2005, after meditating on it for a while, I chose to switch my major from nursing to fine arts. It was a huge change but I've always been very creative so I knew I wanted to live outside the box, and Chicago was the beginning of that.
